Symonds Street is a huge street that stretches from upper to lower Auckland, containing multiple parkour and freerunning spots. SItuated near the top and right next to Grafton Cemetery is Symonds Garden; a small, two-sectioned spot that is a great place to warm up and begin your training day. Accessibility: 8/10 The garden is relatively close to the city centre (about a 10 minute walk up the hill from Aotea Square) and has a large bus stop for Eastern/South buses directly in front, making accessibility a breeze. Although it is not a landmark itself (rather some features of a business building), the area should be relatively easy to find - simply keep walking up Symonds until you see it. I guess uphill walking sucks, so I am going to deduct a couple of points from the Garden's overall accessibility score. There are two sections of Symonds' Garden, the second section can be found by walking around to the opposite side of the building you are training on. Easy. Location: 5/10 Grass, concrete, bark and marble. The best thing about this location is that it is the beginning of a long run of parkour spots down Symonds Street. I have never been kicked out from there (always a bonus), otherwise I guess there isn't anything too special about the place. A good area to train or warm up at for an hour max, then you should really be moving on. Obstacles: 7/10 A range of plant boxes to vault and practice pres/plyos for beginner and experienced traceurs. It doesn't exactly inspire excellence, however has some nice little challenges for all. There are some areas around the back to practice wall runs and parkawkward techniques. Also there is a rather unique tree lache situated next to some concrete walls that is fun to use. It is somewhere I can imagine Myrm having a good time.
Overall: 6/10 It's a good spot, and one that we do not visit nearly enough. I cannot say it is the most inspiring spot, but I am definitely going to be hitting it up soon to try and make some creative lines there. Like I said; it is an excellent way to start a Symonds Street training day.
