Kia Ora Parkour Whanau, Maika here, your favourite vegan traceur (before Tim Shieff stole that title). Isaac, Matt and Avele showed me around North Head for the first time, so I decided to do a quick Honest review of the spot. Location: North Head is located on the North Shore just a skip and a jump from Devonport. It's a bit of a mission to get to, especially when it's a good day for sightseers, tourists and other traceurs creating traffic and filling all the good parking spots. Beautiful location on a good day, it could be subject to some high winds, but would be reasonably protected from anything from the south. The grass is green, the view is stunning, the spot uses the old gun emplacements which makes for an epic background to any video. 8/10 Access: There is parking at the top (primo), halfway up (good) and at the base (only if you have to, but results in a good warm up). Walk from the top to the Northern gun emplacement, which is where you will spend most of your time. If you are keen for some other areas there is a small stone wall section by the western beach, and some more canons, tunnels and gun emplacements around the hill. 7/10 Spot description and obstacles: The gun emplacement has two mirrored gun emplacements (that have been removed) with a series of tunnels and an open underground path that links the two. Even though they mirror each other there are some subtle differences that could lead to different challenges. The gun emplacements and underground walkway have enough obstacles to keep a professional '1 million views on youtube' star Matt Quinlan NZ busy and a complete newbie like Mr Mcfarlane enough options for him to say there more there to do than Aotea Square. The walls are grippy enough, the concrete is strong, there are a large number of metal pipes and objects sticking out of things to makes things risky and provide options. There's a multitude of jumps, cat leaps, plyo's and wall runs in a small space but only a few vaults which limits an otherwise good space. 7.5/10 The only downside is the size of the area and the lack of quality outside of the main gun emplacement. If you love getting some sweet tumbling or tricking shots with an awesome back ground your in luck, but otherwise nothing else is worth the walk unless your parkour vision is on flick.
In terms of a spot I will add it to a notable spot to go to, a great one to add you doing a standing back tuck with Rangi in the background for your 2012 showreel, and if you lived nearby you would go there to perfect some things, however I wouldn't see it as the next meeting spot for Auckland anytime soon. Worth a trip if you include some other areas as well. Overall 7.5/10
